LASER ENGRAVING and LASER MARKING DEFINED

LASER ENGRAVING DEFINITION: A process where material is removed from object to create depth in the material. The measured depth for engraving is usually greater than .001″ of an inch but less than .04″ of an inch. The purpose of laser engraving is to permanently embed a specific picture, logo, and/or text into a selected material.  The laser beam generates enough heat to vaporize object surface leaving behind the desired image or text in a 3D impression.

LASER MARKING DEFINITION: Laser marking, includes a range of methods to leave marks on objects, which includes color change due to alteration of surface properties. A few common processes are listed below.

ETCHING: A process where minimal material is removed from surface to create depth in object. The measured depth for etching is generally less than .001″ of an inch.

ABLATION: A process of removing coatings like anodization, black oxide, plating, etc… from surface of a material with the laser beam.

ANNEALING: A process by which the surface of a material is heated to a level below its melting point in order to create oxide layers on the surface. No material is removed and the surface of the material changes color to reveal desired image/text.
